signs you need interior waterproofing

  1. Musty Or Moldy Basement Odors: A persistent damp or mustty smell in your basement is ofen a sign of hidden moisture buildup of slow leaks. Mold spores thrive in humid environments making interior waterproofing essential to eliminate odor and improve air quality.
  2. Water Stains On Walls or Floors: Brown, yellow or grey stains on basement walls, floors or ceilings signal ongoing water seepage. These marks often appear near foundation cracks or floor joints and should never be ignored.
  3. Foundation or Walls Cracks: Visible cracks in concrete walls or along the basement floor can allow groundwater to seep inside your home. Even hairline cracks may worsen over time and cause basement flooding if left untreated.
  4. Efflorescence (White Powdery Stains): Efflorescence is a mineral deposit left behind when water evaporates through concrete. Its presence indicates that moisture is passing  through your foundation walls, a strong sign you need a interior waterproofing solution.
  5. Damp Spots: Any water pooling or darkened concrete areas are red flags. Interior drainage systems and sump pumps are required to manage water accumulation efficiently.
  6. Bubbling Wallpaper: Moisture behind finished basement walls can cause paint to peel and wallpaper to blister. These are often overlooked signs of excessive basement humidity and trapped moisture behind walls.
  7. Buckling or Bowing Walls: If your basement walls are bowing inward or appear warped, hydrostatic pressure from surronding soil is putting stress on your foundation. Interior waterproofing combined with underpinning can relieve that pressure and prevent serious accidents.
  8. Visible Mold, Mildew or High Humidity: Any mold or mildew growth on basement walls, baseboards or ceilings is a clear indicator of basement moisture issues that need attention as soon as possible. Addressing the source with basement waterproofing and interior weeping tiles along the perimeter of the basement is key to protecting both your health and home’s structure.

Basement Waterproofing Process: Interior Waterproofing Walkthrough

Want to know how our interior waterproofing is done? Here’s a simple breakdown of our process, from wall crack repairs and drainage systems to finishing touches, all optimized for wet basements in Toronto homes

Step 1: interior concrete demolition and trench excavation

We begin by carefully removing a section of the basement concrete floor along the interior perimeter of the foundation walls. This allows us to access the footing and create a trench for the interior weeping tile system.

step 2: Sump pit excavation and installation

We excavate and install a sump pit, the central drainage basin where groundwater will be redirected. This sump pit will house your sump pump, which automatically expels water from your basement to the outside drainage area or storm system.

step 3: installing weeping tile system

We lay a 4 inch weeping tile pipe along the excavated trench, surround your entire foundation’s interior perimeter. This system captures groundwater and channels it directly into the sump put, preventing pressure from pushing moisture through your basement floor or walls. During this process we will also lay clear gravel over the weeping tile to improve drainage and prevent soil intrusion.

step 4: applying delta membrane to foundation walls

We fasten a high grade barrier called Delta MS membrane to the interior foundation walls. This vapor barrier acts as a secondry line of defense for your home, directing moisture down to the weeping tile system and stopping water from entering through wall cracks or concrete surfaces.

Step 5: Pouring new concrete over weeping tile

Once the membrane and drainage system are securely installed, we pour a new layer of concrete over the gravel and drainage system to restore your basement floor. The finish is clean, level and ready for any future basement renovations or finishing projects.

step 6: Final inspection

After the installation is complete, we preform a full system inspection and walkthrough. Every CTA Contracting waterproofing project is backed by a written warranty, so you can have complete piece of mind.
